Key takeaways

  • Most service businesses outgrow spreadsheets in 90 days.
  • International tools rarely accept JMD without expensive workarounds.
  • Software with built-in deposits cuts no-shows by 40–60%.

The spreadsheet trap

Most service businesses in Jamaica start with the same setup: a Google Sheet, a notebook by the till, or — most commonly — DMs on WhatsApp and Instagram. It works for the first dozen customers. Past that, every booking becomes a small negotiation: a back-and-forth on time, a chase for deposits, a rescheduled-but-forgotten appointment that costs you a slot.

The tipping point is usually around 40–50 bookings a month. That's when the cost of running the calendar by hand — missed slots, double-bookings, no-shows that nobody pre-paid for — exceeds whatever a real booking platform would cost.

What to look for in 2026

Anything you choose should clear five bars before you commit:

  1. 1Local payment support. JMD card payments without forcing customers to a USD checkout.
  2. 2Deposits at booking. Optional, configurable per service.
  3. 3A proper booking page, not just a calendar embed. Mobile-first, sub-second load.
  4. 4Multi-staff, multi-location ready when you grow — even if you start solo.
  5. 5Owns its own data. You can export your customer list whenever you want.

What's actually available locally

International tools (Acuity, Calendly, Square)

These work fine for solo coaches taking USD. They struggle with JMD: most route through Stripe, and Stripe doesn't acquire JMD merchants directly. You end up either taking USD (and losing customers who don't have a US card) or routing through a payment workaround that adds 4–6% in conversion fees.

Generic Caribbean booking apps

A handful exist. Most are rebranded white-label tools with limited customisation, no bundles, no intake forms, and email-only support. Fine for a hair stylist; thin for a clinic or studio with multiple staff.

Bookerva

We built Bookerva because we kept seeing the same gap: a booking platform that takes JMD natively, has a mobile-first booking page, and grows with you from solo to multi-staff. Card payments via Inkress, deposits, bundles, and intake forms in the box. Free Starter plan, no credit-card-to-sign-up.

How to switch without losing bookings

  1. 1Pick a quiet weekday to make the switch — preferably your slowest day.
  2. 2Import your customer list as a CSV (Bookerva accepts the standard fields: name, email, phone).
  3. 3Set up your services and confirm working hours match your shop sign.
  4. 4Share your new booking link to your IG bio and WhatsApp status. Don't take down the old methods for 7 days; let returning customers find their way over.
  5. 5After a week, point your old methods at the new link only.
